Orr Lake Golf Club’s history started not with golf, but with dancing! In 1928 Clarence Crowe build a Dance Hall just up the road from where the golf course currently sites. 20 years after that initial construction the dance hall was moved to its present location. Back in those days dancing was a huge social community event and dances would take place 3-4 times a week. There were live bands and the dance floor was packed. This was before the times of liquor licenses and it was a standard practice for people to bring in their own booze. In order to accommodate this practice, the Crowe’s had tables built with a shelf below the main table part so dances could keep their booze out of sight when the police showed up. There are still a couple of these tables around the dance hall today as a demonstration on the history of the old Orr Lake Dance Hall.
In 1960 Clarence Crowe sold the dance hall to his son and daughter in-law. Tom and Goldie Crowe recognized that the business of dances was starting to slow and decided to start construction of a golf course as a way to continue their business. They 1st opened in 1967 with a 9 hole par 3 golf course. Throughout the years they continued to improve the design and expanded the layout to a full length 9 hole layout. In the year 1998 they purchased some extra land adjacent to the north side of the property and build the 2nd 9 holes. They opened the back 9 in 2000.
Getting on in years, Tom and Goldie decided that it was time to retire and in 2006 sold the golf course to ourselves, Jason and Andrea Harris. We have been involved in the golf business for many years and enjoy all aspects of the business. In continuing with the tradition the Crowe family created we have been continuously working on improving the golf course, clubhouse and service levels and have received an extremely positive response to our efforts.
